14: Goin’ Co’tin’

F

rom town, I went to the Lester farm. I knew Danny and Laura were at Jessa’s, so I had to do this today. I checked the barn first and found Mr. Lester milking a cow.

“Hello, Gage. I didn’t expect to see you here tonight.”

I grabbed the pitchfork and put hay in the feeders. “I like you and Mrs. Lester, too, not just Danny and Laura. And I had another reason for coming, too.”

He raised his eyebrows. “What’s that?”

I cleared my throat and leaned on the pitchfork. “I’ve come to greatly admire Laura. Could I come calling on her?”

Mr. Lester looked up at me, still milking. His smile slowly grew. “It’s about time. I’ve watched you two skirt around each other and I know Laura wants you to come. You can come calling any and all days of the week. I love Laura, but I think it’s high time she get married. What took you so long?”

I straightened. “Um, well, I decided to ask shortly after Uncole got shot, and then I didn’t think it’d be fair to call on her once or twice and then leave for a while, especially since I didn’t know how long I would be gone. Then it’s been busy around the farm, and with Uncle Colin, I didn’t get an easy chance to talk to you alone.”

He nodded. “I’m glad you finally did. Join us for supper?”

“Sure.”

Mr. Lester stood and picked up the bucket. “Good. I don’t think Letitia knows how to make food for only two people.”

I laughed and followed him inside.

“Gage! How good to see you,” Mrs. Lester said. She glanced quizzically at Mr. Lester and I held back a laugh.

I hugged her. “I’m happy to help eat your overabundance of food. But mostly to visit with the two of you.”

Mr. Lester set the bucket on the unset end of the table and kissed his wife. “Darlin’, Gage finally asked to court Laura.”

Mrs. Lester’s eyes sparkled. “Wonderful! You’ve always been like family. Hopefully you can be real family soon.”

My face heated up. “We’ll see.”

Mr. Lester motioned for me to sit down. “You mentioned visiting Colin. How is he?”

I took a deep breath. “The hanging has been set for three days from now, but the best thing is that he became a Christian last night.”

Both of their mouths dropped open. “And you think he is sincere?” Mr. Lester asked.

“Definitely. He is completely different than he was. He can actually smile and laugh!”

Mrs. Lester laughed. “Everyone can, it’s a matter of whether they do or not.”

I shrugged. “I suppose.”

“Have you told anyone else?” Mrs. Lester asked after she finished setting the table.

“No. When I get home, I’ll write the family a letter to let them know.”

Mrs. Lester sat down and Mr. Lester bowed his head. “Father, we thank You for this wonderful news about Colin and his salvation. Thank You for drawing him to You. Thank You also for this nourishing food and for the hands that prepared it. In Jesus’ name, amen.”

“Amen,” I said.
